This week, I’m doing something special for this column by taking a look at the 2nd annual G-Men Christmas Special from G-Man Comics. I know, I know that Christmas is two months away and we’re in full Halloween swing, but this special is so unique and wonderful it deserves to be looked at from a fresh perspective.
This holiday special finds Agent Kirby and the Junior G-Men in stopping Murder Hornet (Who’s teamed up with Hombre Pinata and Tigerstrike) from destroying Christmas; Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer and Jenni the Giant Elf have been kidnapped and it raises the question- How will Santa Claus get the vast amount of X-Mas presents delivered in time?!
Rik Offenberger knows how to write an excellent superhero story and this particular is living proof of that as the special really brings out the best in Christmas; What I enjoy the most about this special is it never felt campy nor does it feel like a sappy Saturday morning cartoon. It shines in bringing the spirit of Christmas alive while taking the concept of goodwill towards all and presenting something special for this upcoming holiday season. Joshua 1:9 Holley’s artwork has that vintage animated style to it but it’s also a perfect match for the wonderful factors that Offenberger put in his script- the wide-spread pages and the sequences with the G-Men delivering Christmas presents to all the kids are done with the perfection that I think everyone will appreciate.
The Junior G-Men really knows how to celebrate the holidays and in my opinion, it’s “A Charlie Brown Christmas” meets “Ernest Saves Christmas” with superheroes that I feel both children and adults will enjoy. Imagine reading this when the weather gets cold and you’re in front of a warm fireplace- This special will give you that great feeling. If anyone, however, has mixed feelings about this special? All I have to say is this- At least it’s not another attempt at re-doing “Home Alone”
Well, that’s it for me this week. I’ll be back with a look at the Lynx Grindhouse Special; Thanks for sticking around and I will see you all next time.
