HISTORY

Mateo Martinez and Maya Santiago met at Georgetown University. Both came from conservative Catholic families and initially followed traditional courtship customs. Their lives changed forever when Mateo was shot, and Maya was kidnapped in an attempt to extort her father, Judge Nicolás Santiago, who had previously freed Adrián “El Jefe” Londoño, a powerful cartel drug lord. Maya was rescued by Sgt. Flag, and Mateo eventually recovered from his injuries. However, neither knew how to process the trauma they had experienced. Both were permanently changed by it. Determined never to be a victim again, Maya began training in Luta Livre and self-defense. Mateo, a former Army Ranger and current corporate security officer, eventually took over her training after she mastered the basics. Together, they began an anti-gang community watch, patrolling the streets of Washington, D.C., looking for trouble. Their patrols frequently led to violent confrontations with gang members. The violence gave them a sense of control over their lives again, allowing them to convince themselves that they were protecting the innocent. Their shared trauma also intensified their relationship. To keep people in the neighborhood from recognizing them, Mateo and Maya adopted luchador-style cat masks to conceal their identities. The lynx is one of the few animals known to kill for reasons beyond survival, sometimes appearing to kill for sport. Mateo and Maya have embraced that symbolism. They tell themselves they are doing good as superheroes. In reality, they are psychologically damaged people who fight because violence makes them feel alive.

Both members of the Lynx team possess above-average hand-to-hand combat skills and a basic understanding of Luta Livre. Their greatest strengths are their physical conditioning, combat experience, teamwork, and willingness to engage opponents at close range.
