I’m back with another review- This time, I’ll be taking look at the Lynx Grindhouse Special from Paper Hero Comics.
For those that aren’t familiar with Lynx, former army ranger Mateo Martinez and kindergarten teacher Maya Santiago have dedicated themselves to protecting the innocent after Maya was kidnapped and Mateo got shot, thereby sharing the mantle of Lynx. The special kicks off with the Mateo and Maya stopping a pair of drug dealers but the next day as Maya heads off for a substitute teaching gig, Mateo has to make a bank run but things quickly escalate when a group known as The Pitbulls show up to rob the bank, having Mateo as one of the hostages.
I am really fond of this grindhouse special because the story gives the readers a small but joyful glimpse of Mateo and Maya’s life outside of Lynx as we get to see the love they have for each other as well as getting to see them in their occupation (Maya as a kindergarten teacher is too precious) but I did like how Maya herself got the spotlight thrust upon her and she suited up to save the hostages and Mateo while the latter jumped right in as her backup. Rik Offenberger comes up with a story that brings the action to a boil while bringing out the best in the heroes that he writes; I would also like to applaud him for the fact that Offenburger really knows Lynx or any of the heroes from the G-Men universe as he gets right to the heart of these amazing characters while conveying their personality traits and reasons for being a hero that will touch anyone who reads these titles. Arnaldo Dos Santos Ferreira Jr. shines on the artwork as the visuals are energetic with every page but the credit should also go to colorist Victor Raniery as his colors enhance Ferreira Jr.’s art with excellence I might add.
The story itself may move at a neck-pace, but don’t let that discourage you from reading this as it really lives up to the Grindhouse name due to the grittiness that Offenberger and Ferreira Jr. brought to it all while coming off as another thrilling adventure of Lynx. I would love to see a story with focuses on The Pitbulls (The backstory behind them would be interesting to explore and exciting for the readers to relish.
Well, that’s it for me this week. Thanks for sticking around and I will see you all next time.
